If you’re dreaming of getting away on the perfect holiday or summer vacation, consider visiting Spain. Maybe you’re longing to explore an interesting city or you just want to lie back and relax on the beach. Whatever type of trip you have in mind and whatever your budget, I’m sure you will find somewhere perfect to enjoy your holiday in Spain.

Over 80 million people visited Spain last year making it the 2nd most visited country in the World. Brits are the most likely to go on holiday to Spain but I have noticed that Spain is becoming more and more popular as a vacation choice for people from USA, Canada and Asia. I personally think Spain is a great holiday destination that offers something for everyone.

Barcelona, Madrid and Seville are up there with the big European cities in terms of what they have to offer for a city break. A city break holiday in Spain is a great way to soak up some Spanish culture and explore the sights and sounds of a bustling city. Spain also has lots of interesting cities that are within easy reach of the coast like Malaga, Valencia and Bilbao.

Spain is rich in culture and history 

There is beautiful architecture throughout Spain and many unique historical and religious sights to see. Spain has 46 declared UNSESCO World Heritage sites. These range from buildings of cultural importance to national parks. Including Roman walls and bridges, Gothic cathedrals, Old Towns and Moorish Castles.

Across the many regions of Spain you will find different local customs and traditions. Local holidays and fiestas are held to commemorate many important people and events in Spain’s past and traditions are fiercely protected.

There are two collections of Islands in Spain, the Balearics and the Canaries. Both offer an amazing choice for holiday location with a variety of local attractions. The Balearic Islands are located in the Mediterranean Sea and are made up of Ibiza, Mallorca, Menorca and Formentera. The Canary Islands are located in the Atlantic Ocean near Africa and are made up of Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro.

Spain has 59 airports across the mainland and islands, making it easy to fly into from all over the World. There are also numerous domestic connections between Spanish airports and a great choice of local airlines. Most of the city airports are less then 20 kilometres from the city centre and it’s very easy to take public transport.

There is an extensive rail and coach network connecting all Spanish cities and regular ferries going to the islands and between beach towns. If you prefer to hire a car and self-drive, you will find road conditions excellent.

The weather in Spain does vary from region to region, understandably so being such a large country. In the month of June for example the temperature can range from 15°c to 35°c from one side of the country to the other. Madrid has been recorded as receiving over 2,700 hours of sunshine per year.

Generally speaking Spain enjoys a hot and dry summer, mild autumn and wet spring. There are some areas of Spain that benefit from warm winters and the Southern regions of Spain are much hotter and drier then Northern Spain.

Spain has all sorts of delicious local food and drinks. When you think of Spain it’s hard to not think of jamon, olives and sangria. There are some iconic dishes that originate from Spain such as paella, churros, gazpacho and tortilla.

Great quality ingredients are very important in Spain and every city and town has a central market where fresh fruit, veg, meat and fish are sold. Eating good food and taking your time to enjoy it is a way of life here. The tapas style of eating small portions and sharing makes dining very relaxed and social.

Nowadays, with so many travel providers fighting for your business, it’s easy to find a cheap deal for a holiday in Spain. Every holiday comparison site will show the best deals available and prices to fly from the UK to Spain, including accommodation can start as low as £150 per person.

Many low-cost airlines fly into Spain and the selection of accommodation available covers every budget. Also, once you are here you will find that dining out, holiday activities and general shopping costs are very low.

There is no end to the activities, sports and entertainment in Spain. If you are looking for adventure you can enjoy surfing, paragliding or mountain climbing. If you like to relax you can get a massage, play golf or enjoy some retail therapy. You can learn to scuba dive, go skiing, zipline or hike in Spain.

If you prefer to be entertained you have a huge choice of shows from flamenco to bull fighting. If you like to get a locals inside info, you can take guided food tours, historic city tours or day trips.

The vast array of sights and activities here, offer enough to keep even an itchy feet explorer like me busy. I honestly have an endless list of places to see and things to do in Spain. As soon as I cross one place off I find out about another.

Of course, nowhere is perfect and Spain does have some flaws. The political disagreements within the country do present a bad press and the economic problems need to be addressed. Please don’t let what’s shown in the news put you off visiting Spain. These issues have very little impact on anyone visiting as a tourist.

    For all these reasons you’ve mentioned – I have to visit Spain! It’s my ultimate destination after I watched a movie set in Spain. The culture, the food and the beaches are amazing! Thanks for a great post!
